The Sanskrit words 'ayus' and 'veda' mean longevity and knowledge respectively. Hence Ayurveda can simply be translated as 'The knowledge of longevity' or 'The science of life'.

"Ayurveda pertains to that which is beneficient, malevolent, joyous and sorrowful in life, and also to it's contributors and non-contributers, measurement and nature. Ayus is the conjunction of body, sense organs, mind and self."
